It became Nevada's first licensed brothel in 1971, eventually leading to the legalization of brothel prostitution in ten of seventeen counties of the state. Prostitution is illegal in Washoe County (Reno) and Clark County (Las Vegas), but the Mustang Ranch was not in either of these counties.
